PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: This cam sprocket puller is the 3rd essential tool required when replacing the timing belt in the Audi V-6 and V-8 engines. Combine this tool with Cam holding bars 3243 or 3391 and Crankshaft holding pin 3242 in order to get 100 percent accuracy on timing belt timing and the timing relationship between the crankshaft and both camshafts.
The camshafts are not keyed to the cam sprockets. The camshafts simply have a conical shaped end which mates to the conical shape of the cam sprockets hub. During the replacement of the timing belt, camshafts are held in position by the locking bar, which engages the camshaft "wings." However, the cam sprockets must be popped loose using this puller, and allowed to rotate as the timing belt is tensioned properly. This allows the belt to pull on the cam sprockets, which rotates them slightly, without dragging the camshafts slightly out of time in the process. Once the timing belt is properly tensioned, the cam sprocket bolts are retightened, and cam sprockets are locked back onto the camshafts. Without this tool, and allowing the cam sprockets to rotate freely during belt tensioning, there is no way to achieve a perfect relationship between the crankshaft and both camshafts.
This sprocket puller is suitable for use on 1992-1994 Audi 100s with the 12 vavle AFC or AAH V-6 engine, the 1995-1997 Audi A6 12 valve AAH V-6 engine, and similar engines used in the A4s and A8s during the 1990s and later.
